Some major Christian religions firmly believe that Mary was a perpetual virgin, and ardently support the idea that Jesus was her only child. It is further claimed that even in the process of giving birth, she still somehow retained her virginity. Such tenacious belief is part of their veneration in elevating Mary to a level of holiness and sacredness. To admit that she did not remain a virgin would be an insult to the sanctity of her body which delivered the Messiah.
Considering this popular belief, it is important to determine if the Bible really supports the perpetual virginity of Mary. This topic deserves a closer look, taking into account both sides of the argument, to ultimately see what God tells us through His divine revelation in the Bible.
Apart from Christ Himself, and Pilate’s inscription (John 19:19, 20) — both of which have been nailed to the cross — most Christians believe that there is another invisible thing that has also been “nailed to the cross.” This is due to the apostle Paul’s statement in Colossians 2:14. To this day, there is great controversy as to what Paul was really referring to.
Many Christians believe that the Ten Commandments were definitely included in that which was “nailed to the cross.” That is why it is popularly taught that we do not need to keep any of those commandments anymore — and that as Christians, we are now freed from such obedience, provided we just believe in God.
